Day 23 - 30 Days of Gratitude Challenge: What Fear Have You Overcome?
For a while I always wanted to try hip-hop classes. I love watching dance videos on YouTube where they dance to a lot of my favourite songs by Ariana Grande, Rihanna and Chris Brown. All the dancers looked fkn hectic and I wanted to dance like them.
I used to dance but it was jazz and more contemporary/musical theatre style . Last year I dived into salsa dancing which I really valued as a hobby. Every now and then I’ll head to a salsa club in Sydney with my old class and we’ll hit the dance floor just like we do in the studio.
This year I wanted to try a few things that scare the shit out of me! One of them being hip-hop classes. I feel like you have to be “cool” and hip to go and do something that. I’m not any of those things haah! Don’t get me wrong I can dance , but like free style jokey dance.
So I took the plunge and signed up for a beginner’s hip-hop class at the Sydney Dance Company! I was nervous but I figured there would be other beginner’s in the same boat as me. I’ve only had three classes so far and it’s still a little difficult for me to get comfortable with myself. I found myself quite rigid when I started choreography again. I haven’t done any choreo since I was 17…that’s almost ten years ago!
The fear was basically me feeling awkward and stupid, but really everyone was in the same boat! I’m having fun and I’m trying out a jazz funk hip-hop class tomorrow! Wish me luck :)
To overcome a fear, I try to break down why you have it in the first place. And then ask yourself what would happen if you did conquer it? Then ask yourself what would happen after that. Nothing would happen if you conquered your fear, the worst possible thing can’t happen! If you fail it, then you can try again!
